Jr. Canadians remain alive with OT win over Blackhawks

The Welland Jr. Canadians' Adam Mataya scored 7:53 into overtime to beat the Thorold Blackhawks, 6-5 (OT).

Despite the win, Welland still trails the best of 7 Quarterfinal series 3-2.

Welland overcame a three-goal deficit to capture the victory. The Jr. Canadians trailed 5-2 after a goal by the Blackhawks' Colt Kennedy at 13:09 in the third period. Welland tied things up at 5-5 on a goal by Braden Curry at 18:53 in the third period.

The Jr. Canadians got the win thanks to a great game by Curry, who had two goals and one assist. Curry scored the first of his two goals at 18:30 into the third period to make the score 5-4 Thorold. Brooker Muir assisted on the tally. Curry's next tally made the score with 1:07 left in the third period. Anthony Marra picked up the assist.

Welland kept Thorold's goalie busy throughout the game, and Blake Richard made 28 saves on 34 shots.

Matt Vizzari also scored for Welland. More assists for Welland came via Joe Saracini, Cam Blakely, Mack Seebach, and Matthew Mateljan, who each chipped in one.

The Jr. Canadians were unable to stop the Blackhawks from sending pucks towards the net, and Thorold eventually piled up 52 shots on goal.

The Blackhawks were helped by Tanner Pagendam, who had one goal and one assist. Pagendam scored 13:44 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Thorold. Owen Sobchak assisted on the tally. Others who scored for Thorold included Robert Bentavegna, who had one and Tanner Hildebrandt, who had two. In addition, Thorold received assists from Brandon Kerr, who had one, Mike Purcell, who had two, and Greg Cerilli, who had three.

Matt Coulombe made 47 saves for Welland on 52 shots. The Jr. Canadians incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors. Thorold incurred 20 minutes in penalty time with 10 minors.
