WATERLOO, Ont. - The Brock University women's hockey team (12-13-1 OUA) ended the regular season with 4-3 shootout victory over the Waterloo Warriors (9-11-5 OUA) Saturday afternoon to clinch a playoff berth for the second straight season.
Waterloo got on the board first, just 2:38 into the opening period, with a powerplay marker from Ona Mezenberg. Nicole Hébert and Juila Endicott added the assists.
Just under three minutes later at 5:02, sophomore Kaitie Phelan (Kitchener, Ont.) setup sophomore Jessica Fickel (Fort Erie, Ont.) for her team-leading 15th goal of the campaign tying the game 1-1.
At the midway mark of the second period, Brock would take a 2-1 lead as senior Kristen Dewsbury (Oshawa, Ont.) setup junior Sara Brady (Thunder Bay, Ont.) for her fourth goal of the season.
Early in the third period, Waterloo would answer with back-to-back power play goals just 15 seconds apart from Endicott and Caitlin Brydges.
With the season on the line, Brock head coach Jim Denham pulled freshman goaltender Emily Kelly (Port Elgin, Ont.) for the extra-attacker with 1:14 left in regulation.
As the clock ran down, Brock senior Hailey Webb (Orillia, Ont.) and sophomore Leigh Vanderveen (Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont.) battled for the loose puck in the offensive corner. Webb was able to come away with it feeding freshman Brittany Cabral (Hamilton, Ont.) at the point, who put a shot on goal that was tipped by Brady past Warriors goaltender Rebecca Bouwhuis at 19:37 to send it to overtime.
Nothing was solved in overtime. In shootout Brady and senior Courtney Stevens (Ottawa, Ont.) added the two Brock goals. Kelly came up with two big saves against the Warriors Kelly MacLean and Caitlin Brydges. Endicott was their lone goal scorer.
In goal, Kelly recorded a career-high 39 saves for the victory. Bouwhuis turned aside 31 Brock shots in the loss.
With one day left on the OUA regular season schedule, Brock awaits their first round playoff opponent.
