Badgers women's hockey team fall to No. 1 ranked Laurier 3-1

WATERLOO, Ont. - The Brock University women's hockey team (11-13-1 OUA) dropped a 3-1 decision against the No. 1 ranked Laurier Golden Hawks Friday night at the Waterloo Recreation Complex.

Laurier opened the scoring 7:52 into the first period as Maureen Mommersteeg and Haley Baxter setup Paula Lagamba for 13th goal of the season.

At the 12:52 mark, the Golden Hawks would take a 2-0 lead as Devon Skeats beat Brock freshman goaltender Emily Kelly (Port Elgin, Ont.) for her eighth goal of the campaign.

Laurier would go up 3-0 with just 10 seconds left in the second period on a goal from Fiona Lester. Blair Connelly and Laura Brooker added the assists.

Brock would get on the scoreboard with just 1:23 remaining in regulation as sophomore Jessica Fickel (Fort Erie, Ont.) recorded her team-leading 14th goal of the season and her 50th point of her Badgers career. She becomes just the sixth player in school history to record 50 points.

In goal, Kelly turned aside a career best 37 saves in the loss. Laurier goaltender Erika Thunder recorded her 18th victory of the season adding 13 saves.

The Badgers close out the regular season tomorrow when they go up against the Waterloo Warriors on the road.
