WATERLOO, Ont. – The Brock University women's hockey team lost 4-2 to the No.1-ranked Wilfrid Laurier University Golden Hawks in OUA first-round playoff action Wednesday night at the Waterloo Memorial Entertainment Complex.
The Golden Hawks took a 3-0 lead after two periods with a first period strike from Devon Skeats and a pair of second period goals from Tammy Freiburger.
Only 14 seconds into the third period, Badgers sophomore Jessica Fickel (Fort Erie, Ont.) made the score 3-1 with an unassisted power-play goal.
Freshman Brittney Cabral (Hamilton, Ont.) scored on assists from seniors Hailey Webb (Orillia, Ont.) and Maja Samborski (Toronto, Ont.) to make it a one-goal game with five minutes left in the game.
The Golden Hawks iced the game with an empty-net goal by Katherine Shiriff in the last second of play and are now 26-0-1 in the 2011-12 season.
Badgers freshman goaltender Emily Kelly (Port Elgin, Ont.) made 37 saves in the loss. Golden Hawks goaltender Erika Thunder made 11 saves for the win.
The Badgers will play the second game of their best-of-three series against the Golden Hawks at the Seymour-Hannah Centre Saturday at 7:15 p.m.
