ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - The Brock University women's soccer team (2-4-2 OUA) dropped a 1-0 decision decision to the No. 1 ranked Laurier Golden Hawks. With the victory Laurier improves to a perfect 8-0 in the OUA West Division.
Laurier applied pressure early, but it was Brock that created the best scoring chance in the 18th minute when sophomore striker Kelly Miller (Brantford, Ont.) received the ball in Laurier's goalbox and smashed a point-blank range shot towards the net which Laurier's senior goalkeeper Mal Woeller (Kinburn, Ont.) was able to get a hand on.
Five minutes later, Laurier scored the winning goal when senior Heather Malizia (Burlington, Ont.) crossed the ball and rookie Emily Brown (Waterloo, Ont.) poked the ball in past Brock freshman goaltender Amber Cubitt (Georgetown, Ont.).
Laurier strikers Brown and junior Krista Celluci are tied with Brock rookie striker Meaghan Krawczyk (Stevensville, Ont.) for the lead in OUA scoring with six goals each.
In goal, Brock's Cubitt made her first start as a Badger and recorded seven saves. Laurier's Mal Woeller recorded one save in the shutout - her third of the season. Woeller leads the OUA with seven wins.
