WATERLOO, Ont. - The Brock University men's hockey team (13-14-1 OUA) opened the 2012 OUA playoffs with a 2-1 victory in double overtime against the Waterloo Warriors Thursday night at the Columbia IceFields Arena.
Brock opened the scoring with just over three minutes left in the first period. On the power play, sophomores Kaine Geldart (Kingston, Ont.) and Kevin Christmas (Hamilton, Ont.) setup sophomore Thomas Stajan (Mississauga, Ont.) for his first career postseason goal.
Midway through the second period, Waterloo's Tyler Moir would put it past Brock goaltender Kurt Jory (Brandon, Man.) tying the game 1-1. Assists went to Joe Underwood and Thomas Cardiff.
In the first overtime nothing was solved.
With just 1:25 left in the second overtime, Brock senior Derek Brochu (Welland, Ont.) would be the hero, as he buried a slapshot from the top of the circle past Waterloo goaltender Keaton Hartigan for the game winner. Sophomore Jordan Gignac (Hamilton, Ont.) and senior Ryan Allen (Fort McMurray, Alta.) added the assists.
In goal, Brock outshot Waterloo 50-32. Jory registered 31 saves for the victory. Hartigan added a game-high 48 saves in the loss.
Brock was 1-for-5 on the power play while Waterloo went 0-for-7.
The Badgers next action is Friday, February 17th at 7:15pm when they take on the Waterloo Warriors in Game Two of the best 2-out-of-3 OUA playoff series. Game Three is back in Waterloo Sunday night if necessary.
