No. 9 Badgers fall to Golden Hawks 69-68

ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - The No. 9 ranked Brock University women's basketball team (11-5 OUA West) dropped a heartbreaker 69-68 to the Laurier Golden Hawks (10-5 OUA West) Wednesday night at the Bob Davis Gymnasium.

After starting the season off 10-1, the Badgers have now dropped four of their last five contests.

Laurier led 31-24 at the half. With just under three minutes remaining in the third quarter, the Badgers trailed 47-39, before closing out the quarter on an 8-0 run, tying the game 47-47 after thirty minutes.

In the fourth quarter, there would be seven different lead changes as both teams exchanged baskets for the majority of the quarter.

Trailing by three (67-64) with 27 seconds left in regulation, the Badgers would answer with two straight baskets to go up 68-67. With just 0.6 seconds left on the clock, Brock senior Jessica Del Signore (Brantford, Ont.) would be called for a foul sending Laurier's Felicia Mazerolle to the line, who would knock down both free throws for the one-point victory.

Mazerolle would finish with a game-high 22 points while adding four rebounds, four steals and three assists. Shelby Kurt contributed with 16 points and five rebounds.

Leading the Badgers was junior Nicole Rosenkranz (Niagara Falls, Ont.) who recorded 18 points and eight rebounds. Junior Samantha deJong (St. Catharines, Ont.) added 11 points and five rebounds. Del Signore and sophomore Andrea Polischuk (Brantford, Ont.) both chipped in with nine points each in the loss.

For the game, Brock shot 39.3% (24-for-61) from the field and struggled from the charity stripe going just 15-for-27 (55.6%). The Golden Hawks shot 41.7% (20-for-48) from the field and 80.6% (25-for-31) from the free throw line.

The Badgers next action is Saturday, January 28th when they travel to Guelph to take on the University of Guelph Gryphons.
